I doubt that one has anything to do with the other. Just because an upstate Republican didn't find Cruz's comment offensive doesn't mean they support him.

Yep. The only people who don't are Liberals, who actually hold those NY values, and Trump supporters, who have strangely taken to defending the Liberal politics of New York as if it were some kind of Conservative bastion.

I'm from NY (Long Island which is why I am knowledgeable on this topic) and honestly while I am a Rockefeller and do agree with more liberal ideals, the city liberals are almost San Francisco levels of stupidity (Bloomberg anyone?) That said, I am by no means a Cruz supporter at all but yet I agree with him based on my upstate knowledge.
