Is it up to a candidate to tell their delegates who to vote for? I don't after the 1st ballot then everything is up for negotiation. But they are bound to Kasich on the 1st ballot.
Is there some rule where he can 'free' them from being bound to him on the 1st ballot? If yes, then I think they can vote for whoever they please and Kasich doesn't dictate. Does someone know the rules?

No, I think Kasich would rather give his support to Cruz than Trump.

You've got it right.
Most (90%) delegates are bound for the first vote. But then that slips to 60% (I think) and then to 20% on the 3rd ballot. Each state makes their own rules. Some delegates will have to vote for a candidate who is no longer running. Some Rubio delegates, for example, are already unbound, so those people will be very "popular" at the convention. But others are bound and must vote for Rubio on the first ballot.
So what Kasich is hoping for is an open convention where he and his people can campaign among the delegates and come away with the nomination. And he may pull it off if he can show polls that show he can beat Hillary.
THIS is gonna be FUN!

based on what?.....Cruz is way to the extreme right on Trump on social issues from abortions to LGBT issues especially on the Mississippi and Carolina laws........if Kasich doesn't make a deal with Trump, doubt it he will give his delegates to Cruz.
Cruz is more to the extreme right also on immigration and foreign policy..........I really doubt Kasich would give his delegates to Cruz.

I agree, that Kasich would not want to give his delegates to Cruz, either, but between the Trump and Cruz, I think Kasich would rather Cruz because Trump has acted as the spoiler in this election cycle for the GOP. I might be completely mistaken, but I think that Trump's actions as a spoiler are perceived by more traditional Republicans as an attack on the party itself, and while they loathe Cruz, they don't see him damaging the party the way that they see Trump damaging the party.

That may have been in the works since Trump met with the crime bosses, I mean, the GOP elite. I think they may have offered to back off if Kasich was on the table to be on the ticket as VP with Trump. Time will tell.
Cruz is dead in the water and would have no real value on a ticket.
Although it is said that Kasich is still in to keep Trump from getting the nomination, I think it is possible that he is a place holder keeping Cruz at bay. I mean, Trump is not crying all the time like Cruz is about Kasich dropping out. As we know, Cruz's only possible path is if everyone else drops out and even then, slim.
So, maybe and quite possibly set in stone behind the scenes. I can live with Kasich as Trump's VP choice although he would not have been my first choice based on his bankrupting the country and letting the crime keep coming stance on illegal immigration.

Unfortunately I think it's entirely possible.
Not only do I believe that George H. Bush was forced on Regan, but more importantly, I believe Reagan was forced into letting Bush make all the staff and cabinet selections.

His VP should be a traditional politician, but I don't think Trump should pick an elitist running mate like Kasich who is Soros funded. I don't trust them and it would endanger Trump's life as the only thing standing in the way of their elitist VP being president is Trump if you know what I mean.

No I don't think he will run with Trump. That would make him a liar and then there would be two white guy liars running together.
"...Republican presidential candidate John Kasich insisted Tuesday he would not consider running for the vice presidency. If he goes back to WI, he has good job. If he runs with Trump, he'd end up unemployed. He wants to be nominated on the 2nd or 3rd ballot because polls show he is the only one who can beat Hillary or Bernie.
“Zero chance, just stop there, zero chance,” he told Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co.,” specifically referencing Donald Trump.
“I have no interest,” Kasich added. "I’m going to be governor of Ohio. There is zero chance I will be anybody’s vice presidential candidate — period, end of story.”
