I came across this interesting article in the Washington Post a few days ago.

washingtonpost.com

The 'What If' of Allen Haunts the GOP Race

"The most important word uttered in the Republican presidential primary has not been terrorism or taxes, not faith or family, " GOP strategist Dan Schnur wrote recently in the Los Angeles Times. "Rather it was macaca."

"A lot of us saw him as the 1,000-pound gorilla. He would have had so much clout and credibility within the party around the country," said Chuck Smith, chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party.

Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte (R-Va) said: "One of the problems with each of the Republican presidential candidates this year is each of them doesn't connect with all segments of the party. Allen would have been able to do that."

This is an interesting question. What if George Allen never said the word "macaca"? He was supposed to be a HUGE name in the GOP nomination before his downfall. How would he fare against John McCain? How would it have affected the General Election?

This is just noise in the long term.

Howard Dean's scream. Now that's to be remembered.

What about Al D'Amato calling his opponent a 'putzhead'?

Or the elder Romney saying he was "Brainwashed". I remember both of those.

True, but Howard Dean did make a campaign run. George Allen never did even though he was supposed to be one of the big names in this presidential run.

George Allen could have been the candidate that conservative and moderate Republicans agree on. But, it all went down with macaca almost a year and a half ago.

You know, if you use Yiddish and you still lose in NY, you got a problem!

I know a guy who's screen name on another board is "Kishmirintuc". Only native New Yorkers get the joke.
