LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential front-runner Sen. John McCain on Thursday defended his statement that U.S. troops could spend "maybe 100" years in Iraq -- saying he was referring to a military presence similar to what the nation already has in places like Japan, Germany and South Korea.

Don't want/need to be in any of those places either, John.

And Americans are dying. The treasury is bare. Parliament has passed 2 of the 18 benchmarks. It's time to let them have it.

Nobody is shooting at the US forces in Germany or Japan, nevertheless, the United States is unwelcomed in the Middle East. Why in the world would he make such a comparison. This guy is clearly thinking like a senior citizen.

Sounds like "straight talk" to me.

Until the US weans itself off of oil, we have to be able to influence the Middle East. If we pull out of Iraq, the region will be in chaos and our military / foreign policy will be crippled just like it was after Vietnam - with the additional burden of a global energy crisis (much worse than President Carter's gas lines).

Crude Oil and Total Petroleum Imports Top 15 Countries

Why? Most of our oil comes from other sources. Iran's biggest threat to us is economic, not terrorism/nukes. Are they still trying to open their oil Bourse? It must be difficult with those internet cables still out of commission. It's not like Saudi Arabia is planning to cut us off like Venezuela.

It's nice to see some factual information here. Also, why are there like 40 or so different types of oil, certain oil companies monopolize certain types: someone told me this, it's all a scam.

From my understanding, some has high sulfur which means you need other technologies to refine it. Some is processed from shale and is more expensive to get out of the ground. The quality depends on where it comes from and how it's extracted.

Thanks, and then I heard that [i.e.] BP refuses to buy certain types of oil that Shell buys----so it's like price-fixing the market?
