Officer In Clinton Motorcade Killed In Crash
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ? A Dallas police motorcycle officer crashed and was killed Friday while escorting the Hillary Clinton motorcade to a campaign rally.

Sources at the Dallas Police Department tell CBS 11 News the officer was killed in the crash.

Sources say the officer was relatively new to the motorcycle division.

Chopper 11 was over the scene and showed emergency medical technicians working to save the officer. The crash happened on the Houston Street viaduct, between Oak Cliff and downtown Dallas.

The officer's identity is not being released.

Senator Clinton was told about the deadly crash shortly after her campaign stop ended. Speaking soon afterwards, Clinton said, "We are just heartsick over this loss of life in the line of duty. I have asked that my condolences be conveyed to the family. I am going to call the family, and I have placed a call to the chief of police expressing my sympathy."

CBS 11's Steve Pickett, who attended the rally, said that even after Senator Clinton made her comments about the officer's death, most people in the crowd seemed to have no idea that the wreck had occurred.

That's a shame! Was it a head-on collision?

As an avid motorcyclist I wish they'd stop using motorcycles in motorcades, it's all too easy for the riding officers to get pushed into unsafe corners by speeding SUVs.

Below is a link w/ more on the story. The officer had jockeyed to the front of the motorcade and lost control and hit a curb. There were no other vehicles involved in the wreck. On the news yesterday it showed her speech in Ft Worth that she cut short. She said that it was impossible to have a "rally" with such a tragic occurence that had just happened. I think she handled the situation very well. The officer lived in Plano and the Dallas PD sent a motorcade of police cruisers to pick them all up and transport to the hospital. Later that day the same motorcade took them back home. Just last week I sat on a pew at a funeral in front of Dallas Police Chief Kunkle for the funeral of a retired DPD officer.

Yes, of course, she handled it well. She had no choice, but I'll bet she was seething inside.
