. . . not seek to cut his ties with Hillary. He is on the ticket and on ballots. If she/they get elected, she will face years of investigation. By cutting ties beforehand, he comes across as the virtuous man who didn't know what was going on. He can spend the next four years moving from the political wilderness to the center of the anti-Clinton forces in the Democratic party.

If she/they don't get elected, undoubtedly a large contributing factor will have been the devastating leaks about the Clinton Foundation and the deleted email saga. By cutting ties beforehand, he comes across as the virtuous man who didn't know what was going on and won't be blamed for the defeat.
