This is long and detailed article. In summary, the Clinton campaign feared Rubio the most at the start of the primary season - but then Rubio cratered in his first debate. When it became apparent that Trump had a shot the Democrats held their fire, to give Trump a boost, and didn't seriously attack Trump until he was a shoo-in and the GOP was committed.

"They watched, in shock, as the man [Rubio] they had feared most as Republican nominee tanked under an assault designed to boot him from the GOP primary race."

“The variety of [GOP] candidates is a positive here, and many of the lesser known can serve as a cudgel to move the more established candidates further to the right. In this scenario, we don’t want to marginalize the more extreme candidates, but make them more ‘Pied Piper’ candidates who actually represent the mainstream of the Republican Party,” read the [Democratic] memo.

“How do we prevent Bush from bettering himself/how do we maximize Trump and others?"

They wouldn’t have to work very hard at it though; the debates were the beginning of the end for the candidate Clinton’s team always thought she would face on Election Day. The day after the first debate in August, Clinton confidante Neera Tanden emailed Podesta her analysis: “Bush sucked. I’m glad Hillary is obsessed with the one candidate who would be easiest to beat Besides Trump, of course.”

They Always Wanted Trump - Inside Team Clinton’s year-long struggle to find a strategy against the opponent they were most eager to face. - POLITICO Magazine

Well they can sit on their couches in January while Senator Rubio attends President Trumps state of the union.

Rubio? He is kind of scary! He has sure been a shining star here in Florida, really has done tremendous things for the citizens who elected him. I just can't remember what ANY were!

Rubio is a moderate. His stand on illegal immigration destroyed his chances. Contrary to what the left thinks a lot of Americans expect our laws to be enforced and those who break them to be held accountable.

On paper Rubio was a danger - young, Hispanic, dynamic, charismatic- the anti-Hillary - but then he opened his mouth at the debates and all that came out was a small set of scripted and memorized lines

I think the Hillary people (the media and Hillary are the same) decided to order the media to make Trump her opponent and they did it. Trump still has a shot but they had all this ammo about Trump before they (Hillary/media) decided to push for him to win the Republican nomination.

I agree that Rubio would have been a more difficult candidate to beat.

It's all conjecture, there's a a saying to the effect that if the queen had testicles she'd be the king.

The GOP nominated Mr. Trump and the rest is history.

Trump will lose and in just 24 or so hours from now the Republicans will be playing the blame game.

If Trump wins, there won't be another election in 4 years...
