Trump's job was to get elected, thereby depriving Hillary of the opportunity. So he said what he needed to say and did what he needed to do to make that happen.

He will now begin to compromise where he has to and lay down the law where he can. The presidency does not exist in a vacuum; he needs votes from both sides of the aisle, so he'll do what he has to to get the votes.
