It's a combination of Obama making the Democrat Party more about Wall St and Silicon Valley rather than of Flint and Youngstown, the fact that Hillary chose to continued moving the Democrats from Main St to Wall St, and Bernie for exposing both of them as frauds on economic issues.
True answer : It was the crooked system that gave rust belt whites too much voting power/person
Hillary was tied with Obama in popular vote (small adjustments depending on how you counted caucuses and Michigan)
And she won overwhelmingly over trump by more than 2.5 million votes
The entire count narrative coming from the pundits, the media and the Clinton campaign leading up to the election was how many paths she had to 270 and how few paths Trump had to that number. Nobody - NOBODY - was talking about the popular vote. Why? Because a candidate doesn't become president of the United States by popular vote. Let it go. Nobody cares.

Hillary deserved to be the next POTUS and it was a grave grave mistake to elect Trump!
I didn't list Hillary as choice because it was her job to defeat these men in one form or another.
And therein is the misperception.
Obama and Trump did not win so much as Hillary lost - against both men. Neither man was a more qualified candidate in a traditional sense; neither had much (or any) political experience at all.
Both times Hillary, who had all the traditional qualifications and backing one could possible hope to have, failed to prevail. There is no other way to say it: she is just plain a crappy retail candidate, a relic of failed governmental paradigms and a symbol of political corruption that is off-putting to almost everyone.
