Hillary Clinton garnered more than 800,000 votes from noncitizens on Nov. 8, an approximation far short of President Trump’s estimate of up to 5 million illegal voters but supportive of his charges of fraud.
Political scientist Jesse Richman of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, has worked with colleagues to produce groundbreaking research on noncitizen voting, and this week he posted a blog in response to Mr. Trump’s assertion.
This is a best estimate, by academics, imagine what would happen if someone really launched a full investigation.
"Although Press Secretary Sean Spicer claimed today that millions voted illegally in the November 2016 election, on November 28, 2016 I published the following statement indicating that our analysis does not support his claim. Since then, no new data, facts or analyses have emerged that require us to revisit or change the findings of the 2014 study to which Mr. Spicer refers. We stand by our findings." - Jesse Richman, PhD, Old Dominion University.

There's all kinds of numbers in that article. A lot of "what ifs" and extrapolations and estimates. Some of those estimates way above 800,000
And then there's this from John Podesta (acknowledging that if illegals have a drivers license and attest that they are American citizens, they will be able to vote in national elections):
It makes no logical sense not to have to show ID in order to vote.
Trump opened this can of worms for the sake of his ego, but now that it's been opened I think it should be looked at. People lie and cheat about everything under the sun in this country and I have no doubt that people lie about this issue as well. One of the most important rights in this nation should requires ID to prove you are who you say you are.
It would be nice to have a scientific audit conducted so we can know for certain, implement policies to minimize voter fraud if that is the result of the audit, and put this issue to bed once and for all. Coming back to it over and over again, year in and year out and never having any answers is a waste of time and energy.
So where is the alternative research for these alternative facts?
And what does "extrapolated from post-vote polling" even mean? Oh...YouGov surveys--ok.
Did you read the actual study? Buried at the end---
"...A critical question for this project is whether respondents' self-identification as non-citizens was accurate. If most or all of the “non-citizens”who indicated that they voted were in fact citizens who accidentally misstated their citizenship status, then the data would have nothing to contribute concerning the frequency of non-citizen voting..."
And another word for 'misstated' is 'lied.'
Real valid study.
This is going to be like Trump's birther investigation--a waste of time and money because he's freaking out that he lost the popular vote. He actually won many states by razor-thin margins, so this is basically a pile of crap.

Who misstates their citizenship status?
For legal residents who have gone through the tedious and expensive process of immigrating here legally, and then gone through the tedious and expensive process of becoming American citizens, there would be no misstating of citizenship. Accidental or not. From someone who knows.
