Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel has dropped out of the race for the right to face Sherrod Brown in the 2018 Senate Race, citing his wife’s health. Mandel was the R nominee who lost to Brown in 2012 by about 330,000 votes (51%-45%).
Mandel was the best known of the potential candidates and was endorsed by Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rob Portman, Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey.
IMHO, he's not running for a good reason. If and when his wife recovers, then it may be remembered that he did the right thing instead of pursuing the position.
Now this has nothing to do with the decision but the photo from the link make him look barely old enough to be out of high school.

He is actually 40, he just looks young.
Im curious as to why no one else jumped into this race.
The LT Governor, Attorney General, and the Secretary of State as well as a U.S. congressmen all are running for Governor.
With that much ambition, its odd that no one wanted to try for Senate

He wasn’t going to be elected anyway. Along with being too partisan in a state which prefers moderate and populist candidates, Mandel is known to have used taxpayer funds for his most recent campaign for Treasurer. It will be an easy victory for Brown this year.

Exactly. I wish his wife well but Josh Mandel was going to lose.

Don't forget that sometimes people run with the full expectation of losing. Sometimes it's about building name recognition.

True, but Mandel has held Statewide office (Treasurer) for the last 7 years and was the GOP nominee for Senate against Brown the last time, so this really wasn't a case of someone trying to build name recognition for a future race. With that being said. it is certainly possible that could whoever the GOP candidate winds up being could be more about building name recognition and a base for a future run as opposed to any chance of knocking Brown off.

He has name recognition. He was elected State Treasurer in 2010, was the Republican Senate nominee who lost to Sherrod Brown in 2012, was re-elected as State Treasurer in 2014 and was the best known R candidate seeking the Senate nomination in 2018. The only conceivable candidate who who have better name recognition and a better chance of beating Sherrod Brown would be Governor John Kasich, who cannot run for a third term due to term limits.
