Tony might have not been a great mayor. He might have added his wife's last name to his own. He might have attended an unaccredited communist-inspired law school: People's College of Law. He might not have passed the bar after four tries. He might even have been part of MeCHA in earlier years. But -- BUT -- he is apparently gaining on Newsom.

The Democrats supported California’s “sanctuary state” policy and protections for immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. But Cox staked out a harsher position, advocating Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the Mexico border, and Allen said “Jerry Brown’s illegal sanctuary state” is sheltering criminals. The Republicans’ responses drew boos.
I'm surprised they allowed a political conservative on the stage in the first place. And how utterly pathetic that a candidate who supports the rule of law and acknowledges that federal law supersedes state law "drew boos". But alas, how many students at the University of Spoiled Children have even once rolled up their sleeves and done manual labor? Nay, they've had it ingrained in their heads by their parents that a permanent underclass of illegals makes ruling their gated fiefdoms in Bel Air et al better for their wallets -- to hell with the middle class and the dated concept of nations and the patriotism of those backwards fuddy-duddies so long as they get their cut. How embarrassing for USC...

He's not as left wing as Newsom (or Garcetti)

Which is why I even brought it up, really. I mean, if Villar continues to gain on Newsom, it might get interesting.

I still think Newsom will win but this will be closer than a lot of people expect.

Interesting that the DNC is putting their weight behind Tony and not Newsom.

Villaraigosa Super PAC forms in California governor's race | The Sacramento Bee

I think it's funny that Tony ridiculed Newsom for supporting a state-sponsored universal healthcare system last year without a means to pay for it. That never stopped them before!

You think identity politics might be at play ?

Yeah I posted in another thread just now how L.A has $6 billion in unfunded pensions.

So easy to spend other people's money .

That was my first thought. It is not like when Mayor Villaraigosa made his coming out party at the national convention he gave the faithful a chill in their legs like Presidents Clinton and Obama at the beginning of their runs.

It's not about elevating Villa, it's about nuetering Newsom.

Newsom, like Harris, represents the new breed of Bay Area Politicos. All talk, no substance, stand there and look pretty.

Newsom, if elected, will simply use the Governorship as a springboard to run for president. He is that dellusional.

But with no actual achievements, and the fact that Bay Area politicians are unelectable at the executive branch level for national politics.... he would do more harm to the democrat machine than good.

Newsome is no Nixon or Reagan. He won't bounce back from a defeat. If he loses we won't hear about him again.

Look what happenend when Jerry Brown tried to take on conservative democrat Bill Clinton. Clinton ate him for breakfast, because Bay Area politicians are terrible at the national level. Democrats back east running for congress make a point of disassociating themselves from Pelosi. She's a whack job.
