You need to hit 51%. If all the Dems and most Independents are already committed to Bredesen, he is guaranteed a respectable finish. But that 45% still leaves room for plenty of people to either consolidate behind the R or simply hold their nose and vote party affiliation at the end of the day.

The MTSU poll also found Bredesen had a considerable advantage over Blackburn in terms of getting support from voters on the other side of the aisle.

The political makeup of the poll's respondents included 34 percent Republicans, 25 percent Democrats and 28 percent independents, with another 8 percent choosing "other."

The Democrat leading the Republican in Tennessee, in a poll that surveyed more Republicans than Democrats.

Is this is one of those supposedly "safe" seats for the GOP?
Polls can't be trusted, you know that and when it comes to university polls they are even less accurate. Don't get your hopes up. Yes, anything could happen but we are 7 months away.

Tennessee isn't as red as people believe, Dems have just sucked at getting good candidates for state wide office .

Quinniapac University pollster is one of the best pollsters out there. Where did you hear that university polls are less accurate, and that polls can't be trusted?

If polls couldn't be trusted, politicians and political parties and PACs wouldn't waste their money on polls. Polls aren't going to be 100% perfect each time, but they are pretty good. The biggest issue with polls is that they are time specific. Peoples' opinions and preferences change over time due to the constant flux in what is happening in the world. That's why polls are often redone periodically.

I see it like this. If the average Tennessean loves Donald Trump, believes the real problem is the "liberal media" rather than Trump's bizarre behavior, and supports every right wing republican crackpot idea than they deserve Marsha Blackburn. I've heard this clown spout her drivel for years. She's not just a republican. She's spouts the GOP party line even when it makes absolutely no sense. She's a Trump sycophant.

On the other hand, if people in Tennessee believe the state could use a little bit of balance, doubt Trump's abilities based on his performance so far, and believe in a two-party system, they will probably vote for Bredesen.

The results of the senatorial election will say much about those who live in Tennessee.

The poll in the OP found that 50 percent of respondents had a favorable view of Trump's job performance while 41 percent disapproved. So it seems Tennesseans aren't quite there yet. But independents in that state are leaning heavily towards Bredesen. It will be an interesting race to watch.

I expect Blackburn to win in TN (barring some serious scandal), but I don't expect her to blow out Bredesen. Any other Democrat, sure, but not Bredesen.
You’d be reading a helluva lot into it if fortunes were reversed, so PUHLEEEEEEEEZE give us all a break!

You can't make too much into one or two polls this far out, however I do think it is fair to say this is a race worth paying attention to and one that should concern Republicans.

Now the polls can’t be trusted.

Any of you conservatives have another bucket of cold water to throw on this situation?

Luckily there is still a primary. Obviously Blackburn shouldn’t be the one to win it
