Under the new proposal a Special Election would still occur to finish out the current Senate term that expires in 2022. The change that is being proposed is the Special Election Date would be pushed back from November 2018 to November 2020 if McCain were to pass away or resign prior to May 31st.

This has been defeated in the Arizona Senate by the minority Democrats, who voted as a block to prevent the change.

The Republican incumbents in Arizona are going to be a little bit tainted by their attempt to stop voters from being able to make the choice. Even though their attempt failed, some voters will remember this at the polls.
