NBC News will deploy some of its best known anchors to moderate coverage of the first debate among candidates for the Democratic nomination for president, and air the event for two hours across not only MSNBC, but on its Telemundo and NBC broadcast networks, underscoring the intent interest in the run-up to the 2020 race for the White House.

Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Chuck Todd, Rachel Maddow and José Díaz-Balart will moderate the two-hour, back-to-back prime time live events from the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Florida on June 26 and June 27.

NBC said Holt will moderate the first hour, with Guthrie and Diaz-Balart appearing alongside him. He will also appear in the second hour, with Todd and Maddow moderating.

so what do you guys think of the moderators?

Depending on how tight a program they run, the candidates may get about 8 minutes each across however many questions they get. They will really need to choose words carefully and sharply to make any wanted news. It would be very easy to say nothing or almost nothing memorable in those 8 minutes. We'll see who is prepared and willing to make news or at least a stronger than average impression.

If they go with 30 second questions and 60 second answers that everyone gets to answer, they'd get thru about 8 questions. They may or may not do it that way. If each questioner gets 2 questions to each candidate exclusively that would be 60 questions & answers. They probably couldn't get that many in & answered. Format will be important. I'd guess, in part to satisfy the ego / screen-time desires of the question givers, that they'll mostly go with the latter approach.

How much candidate to candidate exchange, planned or not, is pretty key for making news. Many will probably engage in crossfire but there is risk in being too rude in injecting it or too harsh in what is said. It will be interesting to see who people target. I assume most will target Biden or Sanders but some candidates might want to think about targeting candidates in their current tier. Probably not much below your tier unless you think you can get their supporters. A zing against a candidate not on the stage with you might temporarily go unanswered but surely would get a response afterwards. The response afterwards might not be heard by everyone but it will probably get a lot of exposure and could run on longer than a on-air response. You could spend a lot of time thinking about tactics or just wing it.

Something the Democratic Party might want to consider would be to have some event that is not really a typical debate but instead a more informal discussion of common priorities. Might be tough to control but it might be worth trying. Either at the very beginning or near the end when talk about the official party platform comes up. Could Trump. Impeachment considerations or just as the future election opponent.
