It is true that some polls had Mr. Carter up by 6 to 8 percent in mid-October.
However, several events intervened: one was the continuing Iranian Hostage Crisis, and the other was Mr. Reagan, the last week of October, beat Mr. Carter handily during a debate.
Here, I believe President Trump is in much the same type of trouble: the coronavirus is not going away, a vaccine will not be ready by election day, and he still has to debate Mr. Biden three times. One factor, the debate, he can control if he prepares well. The other two factors, not so much.
Oh, if the PPA is not renewed, the unemployment rate will go up beginning October 1st.
And, for some reason, October seems to be the favored month for a stock market crash. Perhaps not this year, but it is possible that a 'correction' is in the cards.
But, there is hope. Mr. Trump spoke of providing assistance to the people of Puerto Rico, three years after the devastating hurricane. The cynical will say that he has learned that some one million Puerto Ricans now live in Florida, but such people are always cynical.
