Obama will be another Jimmy Carter, period...maybe worse. You do not meet with terrorist groups because that validates them. I think GWB's speech today was aimed more at Carter latest antics which Israel was not thrilled with.
When did he say he would meet with a terrorist group? Last I heard, it was with heads of state.
Isn't that what foreign diplomacy is all about, or do you still prefer to shoot first and ask questions later?
And Carter is simply telling it like it is. To think the Israelis are not without blame nor the Palestinians for that matter is equally impotent. It takes two to tango and someone to call the dance, and Carter is trying- for both sides sake. After all- peace IS his legacy in that region.
Is Carter a good man who acts according to his convictions? Absolutely. I never said he wasn't. However, he wasn't a good politician or president and his foreign policy was comprised more of misses than hits. The fact that the hostages in Iran were released on Reagan's inauguration day was a slap in his face. And the fact that he continues to operate as a one-man, unofficial, Middle East envoy isn't helpful.
That would all depend on whether or not something came of it - but for sake of argument I will grant that (for now at least) nothing has come of it - and in truth, probably nothing will.

Kudo's to him.
Carter made a point to meet with a terrorist group when asked not to. You do not thumb your nose at your strongest and most loyal ally in a volatile region like the middle east. That is diplomacy gone completely wrong. You don't think Bush had to condemn Carter's actions to Israel? Of course he did. Even Nancy Pelosi has said Carter does not represent all Democrats on his stand on Israel.
Carter is not Obama, and Obama never said he would meet with a 'terrorist' group.
And frankly- Carter can say what he damned well pleases when it comes to Israel, and if he wants to meet with an opposition group that has, unfortunately, gained some credibility due to a democratic process then so be it!
Bush can condemn the man all he wants, Israel can condemn the man all he wants, and the democrats can condemn the man if it so suits them. The reality is that no one, not one state or political party, has found a solution to be able to bridge the two..
THAT'S what the man, Carter, is trying to accomplish. Bush and Pelosi are pandering while Carter is trying. (And a lot of Israeli's are praying peace happens).
Bully Bush for his 'diplomacy'- boy is it ever working like a charm..

I think someone as intelligent and well-spoke as Obama is probably the only person I would trust to make progress with aggressive, violent nations. He has an emotional intelligence I haven't seen in a long time.
The better alternative is to ignore them - maybe that will teach them?? Diplomacy is the only way.

My point is that Carter and Obama share the same view of the world and diplomacy. Time will tell if he is elected. At least, Obama is running on all brain cells at this time which is a difference IMO.
Yeah well Carter's batting average and overall stock is a damned bit higher than anyone else in the game right now.
Last I checked, Egypt actually recognizes Israel and tries to negotiate peace on the behalf of Israel.. Not a bad deal for Carter & Co.
Anyone else do that? HellOO?.... **knock-knock**
Oh- no one there...
