Yeah, the Cuban-Americans are rabid about this issue. I'm surprised they didn't toss Obama out on his ear. If it weren't for the insistence, power, and money of the Cuban community, the embargo would have been lifted years ago.

It seems to me that if Cuba was really ready to make such talks, then they would initiate them on their own. However, it seems to me that Cuba's government is not ready to accept any kind of relations with the US. They already steal our oil (they drill sideways under our 'protected zones' established by conservationists), so being friends with the US would make that sort of an issue.

Cuba applied for statehood with the US government on several occasions, but that was over 100 years ago. It is amazing how we helped them gain independence then shunned them later on in the century.

I understand from people who have relatives there, when they send stuff to the relatives, it's stolen by people with connections to the government.

I view this as similar to what has happened in Myanmar after the cyclone: We sent aid and the government kept it. We helped the government but not the people.

I'm Cuban American, 2nd generation. The majority of Cuban Americans despise--and I do mean despise Fidel and Raul Castro. When it was announced that Fidel was ill and stepping down there were huge celebrations in "Little Havana" Miami. Diplomacy with the Castro Communists will not be be popular among our people.

As the article says Obama's speech drew only scattered applause. it was not well recieved.

When are you guys going to realize that Obama is pandering to groups like Cuban Americans. He is as phony as any politician I have ever seen. He is selling a Sack 'o Sh_t to America. A phony like Obama will say anything you want to hear to get your vote then turn his back on you when he gets elected. There is no way he can effectively change anything.

Obama is a total wuss. At least with Hillary you know what you are getting. She's a tough old broad who will stand up to our enemies. Not like Obama who wants to sit down and have a discussion. Have you ever won a fight by sitting down and talking things over? Hell no and neither has anytone else! The Obama "Wuss Way" will not work!

I agree. I love Senator Clinton but it looks as if Obama will be getting the nomination...so we must vote for any type of change or? We get stuck with another 8 years of tomfoolery and monkey antics!

If not Hillary Clinton then we must vote for the Republican or waste our vote on a third party candidate.

The reason we cannot vote for Obama is his softness on Communism. He was raised by a Communist mother and taught Marxism by a well known Communist poet. He went to Harvard which is notoriously leftist and sympathetic toward Communism. His associates in Chicago include former Communist terrorists, crooked real estate tycoons, and socialist black muslims.

MM, because you're a second generation Cuban I understand you feel intensely about Communism and Cuba. But Obama is not soft on Communism. And isnt Communism a failed economic system? What powerful countries are Communist these days?

He wants to help Cuba move into democracy and freedom now that Fidel is gone, at this enormously important time before any new (or old) policies have solidified. The fact that Raul and other leaders havent made any definite statements like "Cuba will always be Communist, with or without Fidel" is good news.

He would loosen the restrictions on sending money home. What better way to build capitalism?

"There are no better ambassadors for freedom than Cuban Americans"

"Never, in my lifetime, have the people of Cuba known freedom. Never, in the lives of two generations of Cubans, have the people of Cuba known democracy. This is the terrible and tragic status quo that we have known for half a century."

"I will never, ever, compromise the cause of liberty. And unlike John McCain, I would never, ever, rule out a course of action that could advance the cause of liberty"

"I will maintain the embargo. It provides us with the leverage to present the regime with a clear choice: If you take significant steps toward democracy, beginning with the freeing of all political prisoners, we will take steps to begin normalizing relations"

The other poster who pointed out people have sent things to Cuba which are stolen by people w/govt. connections, that happens everywhere, the Dominican Republic for instance - any small place full of poor people living under stupid, cruel economic policies. Not alw by people with government connections, those places are small and everyone knows one another (compared to here) - especially a place like Cuba where there's no serious emigration/immigration.
