Democrat Mary Peltola won the special election to fill Alaska's House seat for the remainder of 2022, according to unofficial results released by the Alaska Division of Elections, thwarting former Gov. Sarah Palin's bid at a political comeback -- at least for a few months.

Peltola emerged as the victor Wednesday when Alaska's Division of Elections tabulated ranked-choice ballots in the state's first use of the system.
With her victory, the former state lawmaker will fill the remainder of the term of the late Rep. Don Young, who died in March after holding the state's House seat for 49 years, and is set to become the first Alaska Native to represent the state in Congress.

This is surprising to me with how Red Alaska is. Guess the MAGAS are already getting Trumped in the general

I wasn't expecting Peltola to win but here we are.

Alaska primaries are weird. You had 1 Democrat and 2 Republicans in the same special election.

Penolta (D) 39.6%
Palin (R) 31%
Begich (R) 28%

Unless the 28% of the Republicans stay home. Palin should win the general since it will be 2. I don't know why are you surprised. This is the only way a Democrat wins that seat for now. The general will be different. All the polls have it safe red in the general.

This wasn't a Primary, this was the Election itself. Alaska is using Ranked Choice Voting. Begich was eliminated after the first round and his votes were redistributed based on 2nd choice. After that Peltola won 51.47%-48.53%

The general election will be top 4 candidates against each other, not 2 as you state. Rank choice voting in the general too.

All three candidates will get another shot at the House seat in November. Peltola, Palin and Begich were the top three finishers in the primary for the regular election for the next full term. Joining them as the fourth option on November's ballot is Tara Sweeney, a Republican and Alaska Native who is backed by the state's powerful Native corporations. But Sweeney only drew a small share of the primary vote at 4% compared to Peltola's 37%, Palin's 30% and Begich's 26% in that primary.

This wasn't a primary but a special election. Alaska uses ranked choice voting. That means a good number of those who voted for Begich did not like Palin.

The November election will have 4 candidates; Penolta, Palin, Begich and Sweeney.

I do not like this assessment, as it implies that the Democratic Party is "just right".

The Democratic Party is too far to the left. And, the Republican Party is mostly spineless.

I'm not from Alaska so I don't know fully the voting laws. All the poll predictions for the general is red but just now Cook report printed toss up.
