Republican Representatives and Senators in ruby red states will continue to stay on the crazy Trump train because they know that they have a hardcore extremist base that loves to lap up the ultra-Right nonsense. These candidates really have no interest in governing the country, their only goal is to get re-elected. To accomplish this, they will repeat whatever bizarre or dangerous lie or conspiracy theory that Trump blathers on any given day. They don't need a platform or policy proposal or plan like candidates in the past. They just have to keep parroting the propaganda.
What this means is that the Republican party is now essentially dysfunctional when it comes to actually doing the day to day business of governing this country. We are going to witness this first hand over the next two years as the "Freedom" Club spends every minute of every day creating chaos in the House of Representatives.
The problem is that the hardcore far-Right fan club is shrinking. No, Alabama and Ohio and Florida aren't in danger of turning blue anytime soon, and candidates in those states are going to keep goose-stepping to the MAGA leadership. But in many other areas of the country, like we saw in Arizona, MAGA candidates got kicked to the curb.
The writing is on the wall. Republicans in those states now know beyond doubt that in order to be re-elected they must moderate, otherwise they will cede to Democrats in the future. But even if they do that, they can't undo the Dobb's decision, or prevent future decisions by the activist SCOTUS, and that factor is going to be even more important in 2024.
Hate to trot out an old timeworn phrase, but it is more relevant than ever for the GOP at this point - you've made your bed, now lie in it.
