The GOP can thank George W Bush for that.

Yup.

Even Newt Gingrich had warned as much himself - telling the GOP that they must re-invent themselves and shift from merely attacking the Democrats to actually showing how they will fix the mess the country is in - something many right-wing posters on this board have yet to admit.

I think we can actually thank, in part, Ted and Bobby Kennedy. Back in 1965, a piece of legislation they passed through has incrementally changed the demographics in this country to such a point that both parties, Republican and Democrat, have been forced to shift their politics leftward in order to curry support. 1964-style Barry Goldwater conservatism couldn't make it today because our new arrivals prefer a second mommy, in the form of a federal government, over the doctrines of our founding fathers and the Constitution stated, which is the philosophy of liberty and rugged individualism.

Rugged Individualism and Liberty has been diluted and flushed out by groups, such as the religious right which should represent the fringes of Conservatism, but instead have come to represent the mainstream.

This is why real conservatives are now painted as "moderates".

I guess you haven't seen this latest poll, which says something entirely different.

Rasmussen Reportsâ„¢: The most comprehensive public opinion coverage ever provided for a presidential election. (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/mccain_seen_as_candidate_most_likely_to_reach_acro ss_party_lines - broken link)

Quote:
McCain is seen as the more uniting candidate by men and women, young and old, white voters, conservatives and moderates. Obama is seen that way by African-Americans, other minority voters, and those who are politically liberal.
Yep, there's his coalition.

Quote:
Obama is seen as politically liberal by 72%, moderate by 19%, and conservative by 3%.
I think that dead horse can still be beaten a ways.
