I found this here: washingtonpost.com

Heather Higginbottom, who runs Obama's policy office at the campaign's Chicago headquarters, cited education as one area in which Obama offers ideas that are not traditionally Democratic, arguing that the problem is not all about schools or funding, but about parents who let their children watch too much television.

So, the problem isn't the schools or the funding -- but it is parents who let their kids watch TV!

Dang! I knew American Idol was dragging down the intellect of this country!

I actually agree. It is the parents jobs to raise their children, not the schools and teachers.

Hmmm, do you think that the conversion to all digital TV will provide a transmission switch Obama could use to shut off people's sets?!

His bonus program for teachers is really, really stupid, too. Before proposing it, he might want to have checked out the states that tried to do this -- it was a mess here in Texas. Heh, I got one retroactive bonus check after years of litigation over criteria, the "unfairness" of these bonuses, etc. I still don't know what happened to the subsequent years of bonuses as my students continued to perform well. I think they gave up on the bonus thing.

It's costly and DOESN'T WORK! Obama would know that if he thought it might be important to do a bit of research.

Blame should be put where blame is deserved. The attitudes and nature of education in this country, and it's downfall, should be blamed on the parents for not raising their children properly. The baby boomer generation was a poor excuse of a generation, it is a tragedy that we are a product of that.

I totally agree that what happens at home is just as relevent, if not more so, to a child's education as what happens in the classroom.

Nowadays, It seems that we expect teachers to do the job of teaching not only their curriculum but also good manners and respect, and work ethic when these vital requirements for a successful education are clearly the responsibility of parents.

The reason why some public schools do so well while others struggle is almost always attributable to how involved the parents are.

This sounds pretty much right on target to me. You can continue to throw money at schools until the cows come home, it won't matter much if parents let the TV set babysit their kids and if they're not monitoring the time and content of what they watch.

Classic response. This is how parents who want teachers to raise their kids think.

TV is just part of the problem. The parents do not really value education in many neighbourhoods. They do not buy their kids school supplies but they get them $300 shoes.
