"Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed." Michelle Obama - February 2008
"They don't want the whole pie," she told the women. "There are some who do, but most Americans feel blessed just being able to thrive a little bit. But that is becoming even more out of reach. If we don't wake up as a nation with a new kind of leadership, for how we want this country to work, then we won't get universal health care. The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more." Michelle Obama - April 2008
"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK..." Barry Obama - May 2008
Heaven forbid we work together for the common good. I don't know why that is such an odious thought in your worldview.
No man, nation, or community is an island ya know. Sure, I'd love to blast punk music at full volume at 3am on a Tuesday, but the lovely elderly woman who lives upstairs might find that it disturbs her sleep (and if I did it long enough, the cops would show up and give me an earful), should I demand that I be able to do so? Or do I give up that piece of my pie so that she can sleep? If I follow your logic, to suggest that I shouldn't be allowed to treat my neighborhood to my Dead Kennedy's discography at 3am on Tuesday is an communistic government measure that is 'telling me how to live'. In order to live in a community with other human beings, we don't always get to do what we want, get what we want, etc. living amongst others is involves compromise and looking out for each other. Why is that such a bad thing?
Working for the betterment of our country and our fellow man is a good and noble thing. However, when a politician or his wife uses phrases like "someone is going to have to give up a piece of thier pie" just smacks of redistrabution of wealth. Whether Michelle Obama meant it that way or not. The last country that embraced the whole sharing the pie ideal was the Soviet Union. It destroyed the middle class, making everybody equally impoverished. Is this what Michelle Obama meant? Perhaps it was merely pandering to the segment of society that wants everything given to them, without recognizing their lack in material wealth just may be the result of their own poor choices. Instead of a chicken in every pot, it has become a flat screen tv and free health insurance for everyone. With no real plan to pay for any of it......except for further dividing my slice of pie.

Indeed, no man is an island. It's also true that giving of yourself to others is noble. When asked to give, some will oblige. Some, will not. To force those who will not, still requires force. To take what others earn through production, no matter whose slicing it or for what reason, is stealing. Draconian measures ensure that the majority of society performs a certain way. Which is cool if you're into that sort of thing.

"Having your piece of the pie" does not imply that you can infringe on the liberties of another person...in your example it is your elderly neighbor. You are entitled to your own personal liberties and freedom as long as they do not encroach upon others....and when I am told that I have to give something up (ie. my salary though higher taxes) to pay for someone else to have a family, or help pay for a mortgage that they didnt understand before they got into it, then THAT infringes upon MY personal liberties. Its a very simple concept.
Can you say socialism? I for one think we have too much government already why on earth would any sane person want more government? Especially one that tells YOU how to live?
All hail the Almighty Mobambas! "Please tell me what brand of toilet tissue I should buy? What?! Too much global warming, so no more is being made? And my SUV and home have been taken away, because I refused to have that chip put in my forehead?? And you are strongly recommending that I go down to my nearest Peoples' Freedom Station and be reprogrammed, then I can get some T.T.? Oh, I see, it is only being given out to the comrades who have registered for a work camp and have implanted ID "chips"." Their piece of the pie.....

But you don't mind your taxes being used to make up the loss from the big tax break that bushCo gave to the richest 2% or Americans. You don't mind your taxes going to make up the loss of taxes from corporations with off shore addresses.
Weird!
