It has become painfully obvious that it is time for Jesse Jackson to exit the national stage. Everybody seems to have figured this out but him. I would say this- Jackson did alot of good for the country in very difficult times during the racial struggles and days of rage in the 60s and 70s. To his credit, much of his agenda has come to bear fruit and in many ways Jackson is a victim of his own successes! After all, it was Jackson that forced the Democrats to award primary delegates in proportion to the vote totals for each candidate which paved the road for Barack Obama to win the Democratic nomination. So I give Jackson alot of credit for the good he has done.
But as time goes by, it has become more obvious that Jackson has been left behind in another era and the country has moved on. His remarks about Obama I think were more about jealousy than any policy disagreements he might have with Obama. After all Jackson has said some of the same things himself that he wants to "cut Obama's nuts off" for saying!
Operation PUSH has fewer and fewer people attending its Saturday morning meetings. Jesse is being invited to fewer and fewer events. The Millenium Generation is not interested in redoing the 1960s again. And this was going on even before Obama showed up when Jackson was forced to share the spotlight with Al Sharpton who now has a nationally syndicated radio talk show.
Even Jackson's own son is more or less telling his dad it is time to hang it up and maybe sit down and write a great book of your memories or help with civil rights museums and such. I would say the same thing to Jesse- please quit embarassing yourself and the country. Hang it up.
