Thom Hartmann made an excellent point on his show today. Remember in 2000 when Rove et al (the same folks that McCain was hired the last few months, to go way more negative on Obama), said that Cindy was a dope dealer and McCain had a black child out of wedlock? That basically cost McCain South Carolina and that nomination. McCain said that he would never engage in that kind of campaigning.

While this is not meant to talk about Kerry, the above does show one of several sources of how Rove and his thugs acted in early 2000 against McCain and McCain's reaction.

McCain Hires Another Bush Insider - The Fix
McCain Hires Another Bush Insider. Continuing his raid on the top talent from President Bush's ... top level Bush advisers who met regularly at the home of senior strategist Karl Rove.

Unlike many of the lies coming out of the McCain camp, like Obama raising taxes on those making 40000 a year, this ad, if Obama did it, would be true.
McCain basically sold his soul to try to win this contest at ALL costs, a counter punch to the sleazy soundbite that Obama would rather win the white house than lose the war (McCain saying the opposite to that). I'm curious who the Obama haters would spin this one. This shows a big time lack of character on McCain's part.

Totally agree. I'd have had so more respect for McCain if, when he realized that he wouldnt be able to win running a clean campaign, he had hired fresh advisers on his own and directed his own campaign. Instead, in a truly creepy, Stockholm Syndrome-y move, he ran to Rove.

Do you mean, he is afraid the McCain campaign will start running negative ads against him - ?

No he just doesn't want any questions being brought up about the Chicago history. The McCain ads haven't touched on all the people Obama surrounded himself that ended up being corrupt...they would rather stay away from starting/keeping a smear camp. going.

I think they haven't brought that up because then that would open up McCain to his involvement with the Keating 5. They both have questionable former dealings with people.

Weak point, McCain is in a glass house, is that stopping him from running these ugly ads lately, that he did not run at the start of this campaign or hiring Rove's goons?

BigJon, I have to disagree with you. Whatever skeletons of Obama's you think haven't been exposed yet, chances are that McCain, who has been in politics a LOT longer and been around the block more than a few times, has some skeletons that would be equally terrible.

McCain made a choice to negatively campaign because he was running behind, and it was the quickest and easiest way to catch up. But it doesn't change the fact that it is exactly this kind of campaigning that the old McCain used to decry and condemn.
