"McCain flew down to Mississippi with his running mate Sarah Palin on Sunday to check on preparations for the deadly storm" SOURCE
President Bush and Senator Obama have decided to stay away from the Storm area and trust and allow the local officials to do their jobs. Sounds like good judgment considering the Secret Service places high demands on every resource when these folks come to town.

Catch-22. Damned by some if they do, damned by others if they don't. In the end though, does their presence or absence really MATTER to the folk whose lives will be directly impacted by the storm? I think not.

That's correct, it wouldn't help at all to visit...but Senator Obama has offered to ask his supporters for both monetary and volunteer help if there is hurricane damage...and that IS something positive.

Frankly I don't think turning this terrible situation into a photo op shows good judgement, or even human decency. The people trying to prepare for the oncoming hurricane have enough to deal with without having to shepherd this publicity seeking jerk around and use their resources for him and his entourage. There is nothing he won't sink to in order to get publicity.

I dont like McCain, however I do think its important for elected (or potential) leaders to see the magnitude of the situation in person, and to also see how scared people are and the lengths they must go to in order to get out and to get prepared. Seeing these things in person probably puts it into a much greater perspective...I've never seen something like this in person...was close for 9/11, but not quite there...so I imagine that being close to an issue and the people like this is a help, if only to solidify the suffering and hardships that people are going through so that when creating/signing legislation, sending help, or planning for disasters, the reality is first hand for them.
