So, with announcement that Palin's 17-year old UNWED daughter is going to be a mommy, the McCain campaign has been turned into an episode of Jerry Springer. Can that venerable Texan, Dr. Phil McGraw be very far behind with the 'fix it' show?

Didn't they vet Gov Palin? Or the family? I remember when Jimmy Carter took a lot of heat for his brother Billy, the beer redneck who drove around in his pickup truck quaffing brews.

Telephone interviews only "show" so much. Way to go Johnnie.

I recall reading an article yesterday in which an unnamed McCain insider expressed that many on the campaign were shocked by the choice and unaware that she was being vetted. It was done quickly and in secret- and obviously incompletely.

I wouldn't vote for this guy, just based on how poorly he vetted his veep.

I have read that he did and I've read that he didn't. I can't imagine he did, because Palin herself said it was "a nice surprise."

I don't believe for one second that McCain knew about this before he picked Palin. The object is to try to avoid controversy with a VP Pick.

To ask the OP question. According to ABC news and other sources she did not receive a major vetting by top staff. After McCain started to actively consider her last weekend she was vetted by a couple of lawyers in the campaign. Their are links available where folks in Alaska were asking if she was vetted because they were not aware of anyone coming there to do so. These were politicians and there is a reason I have ended so many posts with was she vetted and it is the fault of Senator McCain that he made a decision without much discussion and consensus of key staff. Remember the quote from the Chris Wallace interview.

This is the Yahoo link from a Bloomberg article. Things could pick up as reporters hit the streets in Anchorage and people there return from the weekend break.

McCain Defends Sarah Palin as Some Alaskans Question His Choice - Yahoo! News (broken link)
Still, some Alaskans -- including a supporter of Palin's 2006 run for governor and a former staff member -- expressed reservations about the choice.

``She's not qualified, she doesn't have the judgment, to be next in line to the president of the United States,'' Larry Persily, who until June worked in the governor's Washington office as a congressional liaison, said in a phone interview yesterday.

A supporter of Palin's campaign for governor, Jim Whitaker, the Republican mayor of Fairbanks, also questioned Palin's readiness to serve as vice president in a phone interview yesterday.

`Avid Supporter'

Whitaker said that while he is ``still an avid supporter'' of Palin as governor, he will continue to back Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

I heard an interview where the "insider" said that McCain had wanted and intended to name Lieberman as his VP. When his handlers told him that there would be an uprising on the floor of the convention and that the delegates would refuse to confirm Lieberman, McCain got angry, got on the phone, and told Sarah to "Come on down." The interview suggested that McCain just acted on his own without any vetting going on. I don't know how true that is but it is what was said and it sounds like things he has done when having a temper tantrum.

Big what? letters stamped on his forehead?

One meeting and a two hour conversation later....here we are. Neither of these candidates is a "maverick"...more like one person on a sidewalk watching a train coming at the other on the tracks - cut to commercial as the sidewalk guy walks away.....
