After the second time W won, there was a lot of analysis done whey Dems lost. One of the schools of thought was that Dems spent too much time moving to the "center" and stopped behaving as Democrats. In the last congressional elections, they fielded many candidates in the southern states that were towards the right - and won. Now, Republicans have Palin and McCain has ensured that some of the right wing people who may have otherwise "stayed home", will not. Regardless of how you feel about Palin, you will agree she has invigourated the Republican base. The Democratic strategy seems to be having 2 center (or just left of center) candidates. Recently, they never had a person run as a VP who was a bit more towards the left and excited the party base (pl ignore Mondale ? Ferraro).
Question: do you feel Dems are ignoring their base? Nothing against the Republicans but it would be interesting to get the honest viewpont especially from Democrats and independents.
They have no real base, excepting the black poulation, and have to pretend racism
is not the real issue to appeal to the 7% of airheads who can't make up their mind what to wear, much less who to vote for-for fear of being "negative(whatever the hell
that means) which is why they always lose.Remember, Ross Perot elected Clinton.
and we have seen THAT will never happen again.
In contrast the opposition has a monoply on EVERY hate position which means
can't lose -no way, no day+ Supreme Court = PERMANANT majority.
Most Americans agree with the broad Democratic platform if asked. But most Americans are too ignorant to vote in their own self interest.
That's why the GOP accused Obama of infering that Palin was a pig just last week.
To keep dumb voters talking about that outrageous lie..........That way they don't talk about the issues!
But to your point,
The Dems do ignore their base. They are to the right of them on healthcare, the Iraq War, illegal wiretapping of US Citizens, and investigating Bush for his crimes.
Just to mention a few issues.
I like to look at like this. The GOP is 95% corrupt and mean to the core. Dems are 45% corrupt.
The solution is to work within the Dem party to improve the quality of representation.
The base does not need to be molly coddled like the right. We know what he stands for and we know what McCain stands for, and we know Obama is the right person for the office. Obama is free to spend his time talking to the undecideds and converting McCain votes.

Agree. You could probably make the same argument for Republicans and their base. But the Palin choice has invigorated their base and say if 50% of them were going to vote before, now maybe 60% will. Democrats have not tried to stimulate their base but are betting they can convert enough independents - this is not easy.
It is way to early to see whose mathematics is correct, but this topic will be much more interesting if Democrats lose this election.
I think they are and I'll explain why. If Dems (Obama and the party heads specifically) weren't ignoring their base they would have at least attempted to put Hillary on as VP. Dems were split nearly 50/50 between Obama and Clinton. To not even vet her is ignoring what the base said about who they desired to have run.
Obama let his ego get away from him in this area, imo. It has nothing to do with mollifying the Clintons as some Dems have tried to suggest and it has everything to do with uniting your base and doing what they want.
Win or lose, due to how close the race has now become, I think not selecting Clinton as the veep will go down as one of the most boneheaded decisions in election history.
Heck no. They selected THE most liberal member of the Senate as their party nominee. Kennedy groomed him personally. The problem? The country isn't all that liberal anymore, even most Dems. They needed the so-called Reagan Democrats to win and they've blown it.

Obama is to liberal, America isn't a very liberal country. This is why Obama has been trying to change his tune and act more moderate, but everyone knows he's always been and will always be very liberal.
I think they do need to focus more on the people that they will help the most- white, middle class, men, woman, and their families. Forget about us smart "elitists" (I laugh at this new buzzword that belittles education and/or brains). We are already smart enough to vote for him.
Also need to get down and dirty and get the middle class to realize that the Republicans tend to punish the middle class and give all the real help to the very wealthy. Perhaps the Dems need to start preaching our United States Constitution (kinda like the Republicans do about the Bible) about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all its citizens and use it as our "religion".

If you define liberal as dependency on social safety nets provided by the government, Americans are quite liberal. They want their social security, medicare, and medicaid benefits. All 3 happen to be the biggest items that make up 54% of the federal budget. Problem is, when it comes time to paying for these goodies, Americans don't want to pony up. I had a conversation with a conservative Republican man (65 years old) who was railing against the supposed Obama tax increases. When I asked him whether he was willing to give up his social security and medicare benefits so as to reduce the need to raise taxes, the guy turned ballistic. He was adamant that he should get his benefits cause he already "paid" into the system. He likes his entitlements to continue. Remember that this is a Republican who opposes entitlements in theory, unless the entitlements being talked about are the ones that benefit him directly.
The point being, Americans don't understand simple math. They can't seem to do basic arithmetic. If you want lower taxes, you have to be willing to give up the goodies that you have been accustomed to getting. There's no free lunch.
