Lol. Hasn't held office since 2002. Ran for the open Virginia Senate seat in 2008 against Mark Warner (the Governor of VA after Gilmore) and lost by 31 (yes THIRTY ONE).
I must admit that I was stumped by this one. I had to look up to find out who the heck Jim Gilmore is. My first thought is that he must have been married to one of the Gilmore Girls.
This certainly is going to be an interesting Republican primary.
Maybe George Pataki was lonely and needed company. The rationale for some of these lesser known candidates is hard to figure out.
It's just another bit of confirmation that there is a new paradigm whereby candidates for prez build name ID, which in this era of 24/7 news cycle, can subsequently be monetized.

He's from Virginia, and many Republicans see Virginia as a swing-state in 2016 (as a native Virginian, I think VA is more of a blue state, but I digress...)
Thus, in actuality, he is running for the VP slot.

He lost the last race he ran for (the open VA Senate seat) by THIRTY ONE. Even for those who view it as a swing state for the GOP, his presence on the ticket would hurt them there.

That didn't stop Santorum either. He lost his Senate seat in Pennsylvania to Bob Casey Jr. by 30+ percent but finished second in the 2008 primaries and is running again this year. It helps having a billionaire in your corner paying the bills though. I doubt if Gilmore has that going for him, but it only takes one or two ridiculously rich benefactors to pay for a campaign, even if is a quixotic bid like Gilmore's.
How are they going to fit all these names on the primary ballots?
Mick
They all won't play in the same primaries.
