In a surprise move, nine term Congresswoman Jane Harman, 36th district Democrat, announced that she is leaving Congress to become head of a think tank. Considered a moderate, or Blue Dog Democrat, on occassion she has been at odds with the more liberal wing of her party, and has clashed with Nancy Pelosi. A special election to fill her seat will be scheduled soon. Los Angeles city councilwoman Janice Hahn has already announced her intention to run for Harmans seat. The LA area district is considered to be a secure one for the Democrats. No word yet on GOP intentions as to running a candidate in the special election. Harman resignation reduces ranks of House Democratic centrists Rep. Jane Harman resigns, thinning ranks of Democrats' Blue Dogs - CSMonitor.com
I've read up on some of her positions, and the blurbs of reasoning behind it. Really, I see her as marginally a centrist. This is her second resignation from office and IMO california is likely better served if she's going to act like it's a part time job between other gigs. The financial situation is too dire. It's best she doesn't run for office again.
As for liberals wanting full throttle liberalism... that's the seed of their own undoing. Pragmatism of progressives, centrists, or even moderate R's isn't uncalled for and they need to wake up and smell the price of tea in china about life. Dreaming something and making it happen aren't the same thing. Hate me for telling the truth all you want, it matters not.
More likely she did something wrong and Congress wants it hush-hush so they "asked" her to resign so nobody would be the wiser... especially Americans... nobody willingly gives up power and money unless threat of jail or worse...

Certainly agree here, she is by no means remotely a conservative, rather would view her as center left, irregardless of her Blue Dog membership.

Unlikely. She is 65, and after 9 terms in congress, being asked to head a liberal think tank may seem like an opportunity to depart the political wars. More about the political implications at this link. Interesting in that the progressives feel that they can pick up her seat, while the GOP is looking ahead to 2012. Rep.
