"[i]nvestigating voter fraud has become a Republican cottage industry over the last 20 years because it justifies questioning the eligibility of thousands of would-be voters -- often targeting poor and minority citizens in urban areas that lean Democratic. Playing the role of vigilant watchdog gives GOP bureaucrats a pretext for obstructing the path of marginalized and first-time voters headed for the polls."

Do you believe that voter fraud poses a threat to the validity of American elections?

"No. No threat.
The statistics bear me out. From 2002 to 2005 only one person was found guilty of registration fraud. Twenty people were found guilty of voting while ineligible and five people were found guilty of voting more than once. That’s 26 criminal voters -- voters who vote twice, impersonate other people, vote without being a resident -- the voters that Republicans warn about. Meanwhile thousands of people are getting turned away at the polls."

Confuse "voter registration" with "voting" in the minds of der Volk. Churn up hysteria about "voter fraud." Now start requiring that redundant ID be shown at the polls, or put out the word that extra poll watchers are in town to just be there at your voting station, just watching, just saying hi.
In the list of instructions, the form says, “Enclose a copy of your ID if you are submitting this form by mail and registering for the first time in Georgia.”

Below that, in a bright orange-colored box, the form says: “REQUIREMENT: If you are submitting this form by mail and you are registering for the first time in Georgia, enclose a copy of one of the following with your application,” and it lists a series of acceptable forms of identification.

Handel spokesman Matt Carrothers said the form says what is required before new voters can cast a ballot. Asked where on the form it says that identification can also be shown at the poll, Carrothers repeated that “the word requirement refers to what is required before you can vote.”
...
In Fayette County, registrar Tom Sawyer said the new federal law creates conflicting situations. The requirement of producing identification when first registering only applies to applications that are mailed in.

“If you walk into our office here today and register to vote, you do not have to provide any form of identification,” he said. “Don’t ask me why. You have to sign a sworn statement saying you are a U.S. citizen.”

Those voters would have to provide identification at the polls, however.

Fake voter registration IS a crime and should be investigated. No one is arguing that's not the case. But attempted registration and actual voting are two VERY DIFFERENT things - and there is VERY LITTLE evidence of fake voting ever taking place.

And I'd say you need to come up with something a lot more concrete substantiated by facts and a source. We're waiting.

Under the “Voting Rights Act of 1965,” the Department of Justice’s Voting Section is legally bound to stop “voting practices and procedures ... that discriminate on the basis of race, color or membership in a language minority group.”
