Palin continues to be a drag on the ticket. She energizes the base but she doesn't expand it.

When I first saw her coming out of the gates at the convention I felt that was all she could appeal to: The far right base. She is turning a lot of Indys off, as well as true conservatives looking for substance.

She lacks substance. So much so that even the conservative base questions the McBush choice of her.

She sealed the deal for me. There was no way I was going to vote for McCain after he picked her.

Independent conservatives may have tolerated McCain's poor choice of Palin, but on top of that, McCain also failed to display independent and intelligent leadership in the face of the financial crisis explosion.

There is absolutely no doubt now that McCain should have chosen Romney, unceremoniously dumped the republican red-herring base, and repudiated the Bush/Paulson/Frank/Dodd/Pelosi gang.

Now that job will not be tackled, if ever, with the emergence of a new, more energetic leader.

The US has become mediocre, dragged down by its own deadbeats and the rest of the world, in turn, it is dragging down the rest of the world with it and, for the moment at least, there is no prospect of a policy that would turn the situation around.

As for Obama, to be sure it is easy for him to repudiate Bush, but that is not a policy.

Now a real surprise would be if he also displays independence from the Paulson (or replacement)/Frank/Dodd/Pelosi gang that protects the deadbeat club and if he can stick to at least some of his policy proposals, such not raising tax rates or introducing new taxes on those earning less than $250,000 and a responsible but relatively quick withdrawal from Iraq.

But on top of that, he needs to more visibly propose infrastructure projects that multiply the growth effects of investment and create real productive jobs, not simply make-work and more handouts to deadbeats.

It seems the only concrete choice now is to give him a chance to show what he is really made of.

I won't hold my breathe, I won't vote for him or against him, but I will wish him well for all our sakes.

Good luck!
