49th Missile Defense Battalion (GMD)

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion (GMD) was activated on January 22, 2004 at Fort Greely. The battalion will provide operational control and security over ground-based interceptors located in Alaska to protect the nation from limited ballistic missile attacks. Alaska National Guard Soldiers will man the battalion as part of their homeland defense mission.

This is the first unit of its kind.

The battalion is part of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade (Ground-based Midcourse Defense) headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo. The battalion, which at full-authorized strength will number 110 soldiers, will provide operational control and security over ground-based interceptors located in Alaska.

Alaska National Guard soldiers will man the battalion as part of the homeland defense mission.

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.

As governor of Alaska, Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden's.

She's also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security's counterterrorism plans.

Well she will in fact have to deal with the other Governors and all Governors are in Washington looking for things. What you think she just sits up there ice fishing while all the other Governors are out there bringing back their citizens tax money?

That puts her on a par with the Mayor of Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and any other major city whose police department is a major link in homeland security.

Yeah, I bet he's terrified of her ... When he's not thinking her nomination was the best thing his campaign could have ever asked for. She was like a little gift from heaven delivered to his doorstep with a $150,000 pretty bow on top!

Did Palin directly approve each of those activities?
No, Campbell said. The governor has granted him the authority to act on his own in most cases, including life-or-death emergencies — when a quick response is required — and minor day-to-day operations.

Wow if you ask me she knows how to command a military (myself an ex member of the army and deployed twice) have seen the true stupidity of micromanagement.

I commend her for letting the people under her who know how to issue orders, and make quick decisions on movmements do just that.

But I still think she is a dolt that doesnt deserve the VP seat, but niether do mccain obama or biden.

Just my 2 dollars.
