Too bad that the story did not expand on the reason so many feel so hopeless. The end result of the Democratic ideology is an entire class of people dependent on the government to control all aspects of their life. An entire section of the population who grows up thinking they could never make it on their own, or succeed without the help of the government. An entire section of the population lead to believe that the "rich" control the country and somehow collectively conspire to keep the poor down. A nation divided by class-envy.
Liberalism (at its core) attempts to destroy the most basic and inate traits of human DNA. For 10,000 years, men have had but one purpose - survival. It is that inner hunger, along with the ability to reason and act on those instincts that has separated man from other life forms. Rob a man of his desire and need to succeed and he has no purpose. A man with no purpose is broken, and is not a threat to the government who controls him.
You seem to be describing the last 8 years. Government telling you the war is for your benefit when its not. Government taking your money and giving it overseas, and you easily accept it because you are so easily controlled with fearmongering. Government creating war profiteering related handout jobs so you will happily support the war. Government taking away your civil liberties and deviating from the constitution and you accept it because you are robbed of your desire to think for yourself with with the fearmongering. Government telling you deregulation is good, feeding you the crap trickle down works while taking your money to feed the rich, and you blindly think its ok because they brain wash you to think its just class-envy.
After 8 years of fear mongering control, Man, with their votes, are now a threat to the current government.
