That's really the wonderful thing this election has proved. Their smears are not working anymore. Look at Bachman in Minnesota and Dole in North Carolina. They are getting punished for their smears of Dems.
The GOP base is about 20% of the total electorate now. They are bigoted conspiracy theorists and religious fundamentalists. Sprinkled with gun nuts and neocons. It's over for them.
Oh it's not over for the GOP. I'm a Republican voting for Obama. It is over for those types of Republicans however. And I don't think I have to reach across the aisle to get you to dance with me in glee when it happens
Actually, if McCain loses, the GOP will most definitely shift further to the right. It's kind of funny actually, McCain is probably the GOP's last chance of a shift to the middle with the future leaders looking like Palin and Romney. A McCain loss will prove that you need the fanatics to be excited and come out in huge numbers. Moderates and independents will be the real losers as the pendulum of power continues to shift from the far left to the far right time and again.
The Democrats will run things for a few years without being checked in power as the Republicans in 2000-2006 and the Democrats before with Clinton for a few years. People will start to wander why things aren't going great and why they aren't getting their free health insurance, increased welfare checks, etc. Soon enough, people will crave change once again and as they have done over and over again, they'll replace the party in power with the only other alternative. It'll start in Congress and eventually move to the white house ... again. And it will be a far more right-wing party than what McCain offers, because this election has proven that you need an excited base on the far left or the far right to win. They'll sweep into power promising smaller government and less taxes to win the independents, as independents often crave change because there is an illusive notion that things could be better. They will also bring with them very socially conservative positions and more tax incentives for the wealthy. History tends to repeat itself very often in politics.
Because none of the other smears have been successful. Thank god this will be over in 24 hours and the McCan't campaign can go away and his spin doctors can crawl back in their hole until 2012.

While I totally agree with you on this, I am really hoping we will start to see strong 3rd, 4th and maybe even 5th "parties" emerge with strong candidates and enough backing to really get out there enough to get noticed.
I too would love to see the cycle broken and start over.
