They are not allowed to use churches as polling places other than for local elections (at least not in Alabama or South Carolina).

Besides, there is plenty of space to set up in churches, is that somehow going to offend you?

I've never heard of this, but my bet is that in some communities, it's one of the few large buildings that can accommodate the polling that all the voters are familiar with.

If the church is profiting from the election process, yes. Churches should not receive income from the government.

Not at all, but I have a problem if there's any money being paid by the government to those churches in order to rent that space.

Churches as well as synagogues are used in Denver. They move the equipment in beforehand, then move it out afterwards.
What money would change hands?
I don't think any religiousness rubs off or anything like that.
It's just a place to vote.
I vote at the rec center where I live now. It's the first time in years that I've voted in a non-religious community center, and here I am living in the Bible Belt.

My parents have always voted in an old tobacco barn. I voted at the community center this morning.

Churches are empty during the week. I don't have a problem with it.

My mothers church is a polling place and I'll have you know that they hold legitimate voting! They use legitimate voting staff, not church members.
