That dress was horrendous. But she's the president's wife... she can wear what she wants.

Yes, other people DID see a black widow. Search the internet. There's lots of talk about it. And *I* didn't say it was foreshadowing; I saw that discussed when I was searching to see if others thought of black widow when they say that dress. I don't mind the dress and I wasn't talking about fashion, only that the dress looked like a black widow to me.

Umm, aren't you the same individual who has lamented the picking apart of Palin, particularly post-election? It was a black and red dress. This brouhaha is a bit silly. Actually, it is a lot silly...

Just added edit...I do see the lava lamp thing, but am stilly wondering why fashion errors are major discussion points.

I am sure they will get someone to fit her clothing so that it hangs better on her figure. She needs her clothing tailored so that the clothes camouflage her figure flaws. Better fabric would also help. Some of the fabric are too thin and they don't hang well.

I didn't vote for Obama but I certainly don't want anything to happen to him, either. I have worried for 8 years that someone would make an attempt on Bush's life. I just wish she'd picked a different dress.
Why Bush was a good president...why would you worry about him?
I am totally confused!

Bush was villified. I don't think he was a bad president. I was worried because there were so many haters out there.

Even if she had a female figure, that dress was hideous looking. God, will someone teach it how to dress!

Who designed Michelle Obama's dress for election night? | The Dish Rag | Los Angeles Times (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/11/who-designed-mi.html - broken link)

To those of you who are saying I bring this up to bash Michelle; you are wrong. The ONLY point I was making is that the dress reminded me of a black widow and I was surprised she wore that. I don't care one way or the other about the dress other than that and generally I like the way she dresses. I just thought this was an odd choice. And apparently I am not the only one who thought it looked like a black widow. Look below at the comments from the article posted above.

From the comments section after the article:

Reminiscent of a black widow spider...

Posted by: gt | November 05, 2008 at 11:02 AM

MMMMM can you say Black Widow? Real poor taste. But hey, GO OBAMA!!

Posted by: Kate | November 05, 2008 at 11:12 AM

A Black Widow spider immediately came to mind, unfortunately. I don't understand her choice here. It was a red hour-glass set against a black bodice, ...on her tummy side. just like the spider. What was she thinking!

Posted by: Maria | November 05, 2008 at 11:17 AM

I thought it was terribly visually distracting and it looked very much like a black widow spider Halloween costume. It was too bright, bold and busy. She needed something classic or "simply elegant". It was the worst dress I have ever seen worn at an important historic event. I loved relishing in the moment nonetheless but hope Michelle gets some fashion help for the future inaugural events.

I thought black widow spider when I saw the hideous dress. Makes me wonder what statement she's sending out now?

Posted by: paula | November 05, 2008 at 12:31 PM

I love the Obamas. but I thought that black on red dress made her look like a black widow spider. Creepy! And she needs a bit of work on her stance too...

Posted by: flora68 | November 05, 2008 at 12:35 PM

Dreadful is what I thought, just dreadful. And it DOES look like a black widow, EXACTLY what came to mind when I saw her. If people believe in signs, they might be freaking out. It WAS very funky and maybe fashion forward but save it for the runway, not the acceptance speech! PLEEEEASE MICHELLE, promise you'll never dress like a spider again! We love you, but not your dress!

Posted by: Sami | November 05, 2008 at 01:00 PM

It detracted in a bad way from a momentous, historic, once-in-a-lifetime occasion. I couldn't look at anything but that strange dress. Not a good choice on an otherwise perfect night. It did look like a black widow spider.

On the night when awesome power became the additional major theme of the phenomObamanon, THAT'S when she came out dressed like a black widow spider. Power the great aphrodisiac, and the tension between his new power relationship with the world and her loving, power relationship with him... becomes complementarity and harmony.
Yeah, that's probably it. That's what she meant.
Posted by: Stallman | November 05, 2008 at 02:05 PM

They looked like the Addams Family, for Pete's sake! My jaw dropped like a hot rock. I immediately focused on Michelle as a black widow, which bothers me, because I really like her, and don't want to see her become the proverbial 'black' widow...Yikes!

The dress looks like a black widow spider...

Posted by: BJ | November 05, 2008 at 03:17 PM

She looked like a Black Widow Spider. That's all I saw when she came on stage. Darn shame, too. She's beautiful.

Posted by: Kathi | November 05, 2008 at 03:43 PM

Now as to an earlier observation that someone pointed out that she looked like a black widow spider, might not be to far off base. You have to keep in mind that she has been a really high powered corporate lawyer, and she uses a real 'folksy' approach to media and the like. You can suspect she would be like that to a jury. She is really cerebral about her approach to fashion.
Overall I like it. I would buy something like it for my girlfriend.
Posted by: Pollworker | November 05, 2008 at 03:43 PM

I was shocked at the colors the first lady- elect chose to wear on this historic night. I thought she looked like a beetle or a black widow spider. It was far from flattering. The black and red symbolism to me spoke of the red for power, the black for black power. OK, but I thought he was elected to be President of U.S.A. of all the people! Dressing very young children in all black and all red was very strange by any account. A call should go out for an elegant designer, dresser for the whole family. Call Oprah, she always dresses beautifully.

Posted by: destinymama | November 05, 2008 at 03:55 PM

I also was thinking black widow spider, or ANT.

Posted by: Bud | November 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM

I liked the dress but it wasn't flattering on Michelle Obama. I don't think it is an accident that the future first lady was dressed like a black widow. People at this level don't do anything by accident. It was designed to send a message.

Posted by: Monica | November 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM

Definately a Black Widow Spider but the scarier situation is the post by "Sasha". Boy our public education system is certainly letting us down. Not only can't she spell but it doesn't even seem like she can but a halfway decent thought together. We're in big trouble.

Posted by: Tracee | November 05, 2008 at 06:16 PM

My son thought she looked pregnant. I thought she looked like she was wearing an apron and my husband thought she looked like a black widow. Not the best choice for such a historical moment.

Posted by: j | November 05, 2008 at 06:21 PM

Pregnant First Ladybug? Black Widow? I do not care if it has anything to do with "her" heritage. It was ugly and so was the campaign and election and I bet the next 4 years for everyone will be as well.

Posted by: T. Daine | November 05, 2008 at 06:41 PM

:
that was one bad pick for such a historic night! probably never heard of a black widow spider in chicago, but it definitely sends the wrong symbolism.
what were you thinking? now we have to see it over and over again and be embarassed for you over and over again. say you're sorry and move on!

Posted by: skipshot | November 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM

Then we just called it a "black widow" mess and moved on. Together with that pea-soupy neon thing Mrs. Biden had on, the two of them clearly had not coordinated anything.
I still miss Hillary's classy pants suits.
But you can tell the people who worship Obama and see him as a deity, not just a politician, because they will just automatically LOVE anything she wears, even if it looks like...well...that thing she had on.
Posted by: Christophe | November 05, 2008 at 09:14 PM

She totally looked like a Black Widow Spider-very fitting for the wife of a radical socialist with terrorist connections!!

Posted by: Edward Berg | November 05, 2008 at 10:26 PM

I don't consider a Black Widow costume to be fashion.
