Barack Obama, Robinson's brother-in-law, had been elected the 44th president of the United States. The family had a spent a long day in Chicago, one mixed with normal and well-beyond-normal activities.

After a massive rally at Grant Park in Chicago, where more than 120,000 people had gathered to celebrate Obama's victory, Robinson had taken his wife, Kelly; son, Avery; and daughter, Leslie; along with the Obamas' two daughters, back to the Obamas' house. Barack and Michelle Obama had stayed behind to greet well wishers, and they finally arrived home at 2 a.m.
"They just walk in, and it's like, 'These people, who I've known all my life, are now the president and the first lady,'" Robinson said.
On Wednesday afternoon, Robinson, Oregon State's first-year basketball coach, was back at Gill Coliseum. In between watching game video with his team and starting practice, he held a news conference before a dozen reporters and five TV cameras at which he described Election Day's events and emotions.
