I think Obama and Hilary see each other as competitors not enemies.

Obama doesn't want to be surrounded by a group of "Yes men/women". He wants to surround himself with smart, competent people who are not afraid of voicing their opinion/ideas. Think of disagreements/dicussions/different points of view as "brainstorming". That's how NEW ideas/approaches emerge. He doesn't need to be fearful or intimidated by anybody. He knows that in the end, he will decide.

When you compare that to GWB's management style (if you want to call it that), then those two are 180 degrees apart. GWB said many times that "he knew what was best". GWB did not tolerate differences of opinion. All he wanted was applause or silence. He "governed" with the arrogance of a stupid fool. What he said, went. GWB's biggest mistake was that he believed his own publicity as framed by Rove. (Yes, that's why I hold him responsible for darn near everything that went wrong during his administration). GWB's appointments were based, first and foremost, on loyalty not on competence. So, there's some change for you.

Hilary Clinton is well qualified to be Secretary of State: she's a lawyer, she developed negotiating skills in the Senate, she can formulate policies, she can carry them out, she knows many world leaders, she's well traveled, she's very well informed, she's shrewd, she's tough, she can command respect. Never mind that Obama will be her boss. She can handle that. After putting up with Bill Clinton's crap for over 30 years, she can handle serving at the pleasure of the president of the USA. She will do her best because she'll want to demonstrate that she has "statesmanship". I believe she has plans for 2016. Nothing wrong with that-it's always good to have goals. She can do SOS standing on her head and then run again in 2016. It is in her best interests that Obama succeeds, because then she can take credit for being part of that success. She can ride on those coattails.

Smart move all around, I'd say.

EDNurse, I agree with you. This is Obama's style since being President of Harvard's Law Review in the old days.

Isn't it interesting, though, that for one who made opposing the war and its inception as the centerpiece of his campaign, Obama has now chosen two senators who supported the war as his VP and Sec. of State? Hmmm, what does that tell us?
That tells us that Obama knows how to use dimplomacy. Obama understands that most that voted for the war were duped by the deception of the Bush Crime Family just as the American people were. There were guys that enlisted because they were told Iraq had something to do with 9/11. Many were killed and obviously they would not have gone if they knew the truth then. I do not believe that Hillary and the others would have voted for what turned out to be an illegal occupation of a sovereign nation.

This makes absolutely no sense. The Clintons have no power over Obama; Obama has no need to keep Hillary out of the country. She's in a position of having to support him for her own political future.

I think Obama is picking all the right people because no matter how they voted in the past, he is now their boss! So whatever they did then is moot now. They will all follow his directives. You might not be able to change the face, but you can change the job!

The majority of the nation knows Obama has to first deal with the economy. They get it.

I have a clearly revoluntionary thought. Maybe they both really want to do what is best for the country? Just maybe?

Class has absolutely zero to do with it. It's called politics pure and simple. No matter what party you belong to, you have to recognize politics when you see it on the platter.

I don't think how she can serve her country best has even crossed her mind. The decision is what will serve Hillary Clinton best. That's always been the focus.

Don't misunderstand me, I have no problem with her appointment. I'm not sure who would be best, but I know I prefer her over Kerry.

But I have to say I'm not getting any of these appointments. I thought we were talking "change". This is looking more and more like the 90's to me.

I could swear I remember Obama saying he was going to change Washington ... now I'm guessing he meant "change it back"

No. He's going to make the old guard do it HIS way.
