It's so scary that they got as many votes as they did, he and Palin. Millions of people were so eager to believe anything negative about Obama no matter how insane. If Obama hadn't run such an astounding get-out-the-vote, if he hadn't been as decent a person as he is - if he'd gotten flustered and sunk to McCain's and Palin's levels - they WOULD have won.

Yes indeed. Here's a guy who stated he didn't know economics (and had an economic criminal like Phil Gramm as his economics advisor) and who had said the economy was sound, suddenly sticking his nose into the White House affair to save the economy from totally tanking. It was all grandstanding done to get free air time and to fool more people that he's some sort of patriotic saviour of our nation. What a hoot.

Not sure if THIS one event was what sunk his campaign. For a listing of at least 15 major screw ups, see this thread:

The "campaign suspension" is number two on the list, it was a serious mistake by McCain's campaign.

McCain ceased to be the independent McCain, but continued to market himself as a maverick while kissing extreme right wing butt. Palin's choice was an example of this. Suspension of the campaign was done later on and was only a desperation move (that morning his poll #s had fell). But, he had lost the election much earlier when independents (who generally liked him) had moved away from him (for various reasons). He lost the "middle" - this is where elections are lost and won.

"the foundations of our economy are fundamentally safe and sound."

That is what killed it.

And then choosing Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin and going negative, both clear indicators he is not a leader and unfit to be president.

That had to be a huge part of it. Between appearing totally out of touch, he also insulted all those people who've lost jobs, lost homes and seen their retirement accounts plummet, while he was too senile to know how many homes he owned.

John would have keeled over out of the gate when asked to come up with an economic recovery plan and Sarah would have been in the Oval Office chop-chop.

Can you envision the sign on her desk proclaiming "The Moose Stops Here" and War and Depression on hold while she learns enough geography so that she isn't looking out the window trying to see Mt. Ranier?

Todd in the meantime would busy himself fishing the Tidal Basin and hanging fish filets to dry on the branches of the cherry trees along the Mall.

We might have missed something by not voting McCain/Palin.

Nah.

I don't believe the mainstream Republicans realistically wanted to win this election. They needed to do several things:

1. Distance themselves from Bush. Having a Democrat in the White House would do that. They can let Obama fix or not fix the things that need fixing, and they will have issues to run on in 2012. If they were in charge and things didn't work, 2012 and many elections later would be lost. They probably saw themselves in a better position criticizing the Democratic Congress and Executive Branch than having to constantly apologize for Bush.

2. They needed to discredit the far right evangelical base so that it will not have so much control in the next election. McCain/Palin helped.

3. They needed to energize the moderate base. McCain/Palin created that energy for negative reasons.

4. They needed to reorganize around moderates. The loss of this election gives them the excuse and reason to do so.
