For all Republicans who continue to put Ronald Reagan on an alter, which he most definitely does NOT deserve, please read the following editorial by Paul Krugman: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/01/op...EHg04H218ziqLA

Reagan is the one who started both the federal government and American citizens down the road of massive debt levels and fiscal imprudence, and little personal savings...

His financial deregulation removed limits on mortgages, which in turn eventually aided the housing bubble that is now unwinding...

Be open minded - and realize that this person who many in the GOP regard as their GOD was the one who started the ball rolling towards this economic catastrophe that culminated in the Bush administration, and which we are trying desperately to get out of today...

And all the Democratic and Republican administrations along the way played their part. Now Obama has taken the gauntlet even further towards the demise of the USA. When will the party line fools wake up.

Agreed - subsequent administrations on both sides after Reagan played their part... Obama is playing his now...

The whole point of the article is: 'When' did the current economic disaster truly start? - What were it's roots? - What was the point in time when things fundamentally changed, enabling today's economic mess?...

We could have done without the $10 Billion/month spent on an endless and useless war in Iraq!

Aw, c'mon. That's not but $30 each per month for every man, woman, and child in the country.

For only a dollar a day you get to own a piece of your very own war. It's like helping to make history. For that paltry sum you get to help underwrite the Bush Legacy, which was to take Reaganomics to it's logical end. Deficits don't matter. Ronnie said so.

Don't you feel like you're getting your money's worth? Isn't it better than throwing it away on a donation to an IRA or a 401K?

While Dr Krugman is one of the more sensible (or less dogmatic) of the mainstream economists that gets some air time (and due to the corporate ownership of our media, only economists with certain views get air time), and despite that old nutbag Reagan deserving much (but not most) blame for our present dire situation, I would respectfully point out that the roots of our crisis go back beyond the Ronster, and his "Trickle Down" garbage, so utterly a failure.

The year was 1973; it was the beginning of something never seen in the experience of Americans to that point. Namely, it was the start of a 30 (+) year decline in Real Wages, that left the average worker missing 1/3 of his/her paycheck vis-a-vis the earlier generations.

It's ultimate effect was a massive redivision of wealth that bottomed-out last year when we had the dubious (and deadly) distinction of equaling the lopsided wealth distribution, among the Rich v Middle Class, that was last seen in (go figure!) 1929.

To find out what the true cause is, one therefore must look at 1973, as it was the turning-point in the USA's history.

That was the year of the Tokyo Round of trade talks pursuant to GATT, which ended our 180-year long career as bilateral traders. It was the year which saw our tariffs drop to meaningless (5% or less) rates.

I agree with you... however as you said "republicans" that admire Ronald Reagan... so then you KNOW that there is more than one type of republican... and as such, I wish the liberals here would stop lumping it all together, but it does seem very "convenient" for them, doesn't it... and by the way, I am a conservative and I don't admire Ronald Reagan at all... for the very reason you stated... he was more "liberal" in fiscal policies than a true republican...

It's both parties not just one. Your obviously anti GOP claim isn't accurate.
I'm not a republican, I'm just saying. They're ALL at fault.

I think the most important part of that article is the statement about the effects not showing until 25 years later. We're always in this mode of 'now' and don't realize what a politician is getting credit or blame for could be in small or large part due to some else's doing and they just happen to be in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time.

Ronnie Raygun cut upper level taxes and increased military spending at the same time. No wonder we went broke.
