Looking on this section of the forum, watching TV, and checking the blogosphere, I am noticing that Repubs and Dems have more and more been punching below the belt these days.
Republicans and Obama Haters seem to think that by attacking all the groups that support Obama (or that they assume support him), they can reinvigorate their base, assuming their base is not invigorated already. Any challenge to their logic or counter example is treated as if the person bringing it to light is a 'socialist', and it seems that no style of attack is unacceptable (Negative commenting on Mexican immigrants, Audra Shay/other anti-black statements, Calling Sotomayer a racist, Comments on Obamas children, Most talk radio and Fox News etc).
Democrats and Obama supporters seem to think they can win every argument simply by bringing up the failures of Bush as a counter example, and that the only way to convince people that are on the fence to vote the other way is by mocking Republicans and essentially generalizing them all as the smaller worst examples of their membership (All of the more popular sitcoms, Comedy news stations and celebrity shows) . Everyone that votes Republican becomes a 'redneck fascist' or a 'gay bashing homophobe' or a 'closet bigot or racist'.
The Right gets its jolly's saying idiotic things that they hope will infuriate the left. The left gets its jollys mocking the Right and using the worst examples of the right as poster childs.
I guess my question is, does each side actually think this is going to get you more votes and more supporters? Attacking the opposite sides membership only makes the person saying it look either stupid or like a jerk, which actually does more to turn a moderate person (the people that are the real election deciders at this point) away.
Am I alone in this thought?
