I agree with the majority here. Socialism, and communism never worked in the past, nor will it ever work in America. Let's not forget what Russia fought to get away from for a long time.
A common insult towards the Democratic Party recently has been "Socialist". I'm on the fence about this issue, but let's be serious, why wouldn't either of these political institutions work in America?
Have you ever seen anyone swimming to Cuba? Trying to escape into North Korea? Fleeing a capitalist country to move to the old Soviet Union? The former East Germany?

right on ! the people of berlin risked their lives to get over that wall.aswell as cubans floating across the ocean on a tire tube. the american way the best way freedom!
People are basically selfish. Some may find that to be a character flaw but that particular flaw took us from cat food to standing on top of the food chain. We are social animals but we're not herd animals.
This Republic was built on a respect and belief in individualism. Competition in the private sector is what makes businesses and individuals successful, not government takeover, bailouts or social programs.
How many dams (create electricity and control floods) have been built by private companies in the US?
Without them, nobody would have electricity and millions of people would lose their house every year.
Or you think that electricity "comes from the breaker box"?
In communist countries you are enslaved by the State. In capitalist countries you are enslaved by the economy and the employers. In socialist countries you are free to work for yourself without worrying about starving outside in the dark.
Guess which I prefer?
I'd really like to hear how you came to this conclusion (in red). Please explain in you own words without quoting some inane psychobabble exactly how anyone in the US is enslaved by the economy or their employer.
Remember that though many people may be in a bad place right now, the vast majority are there because they bought way more house than they could afford and ran up credit card bills buying toys and no one held a gun to their head when they made the decision to sign their lives away. Some did everything right and had a run of bad luck but most just forgot that an I-Pod is a luxury and not a need. People may feel trapped in a job they hate because they'll lose their borrowed way of life but that's still a choice they made for themselves.
If you had said people in capitalist nations were slaves to advertising, I wouldn't entirely agree but wouldn't call you on it either. Any enslavement in the US today would be more of a voluntary indentured servitude in exchange for granite counter tops that are never used to prepare food and which only serve to impress guests.

The goal of those economies are to make sure that people have work and food.
"Progress" (however is defined) is not the #1 priority.
In capitalism, the goal is for rich people to be happy and make a lot of profit and supposively, that happiness and wealth will trickle down to us.
The problem is that companies profits increase when people are fired (when unemployment goes up)
BTW, I believe the best economy is a balance between socialism & capitalism.

Actually you just decribed a somewhat innacurate interpretation of the Trickle Down Theory, not capitalism, and it doesn't answer the question I asked.
