Democrats tried this with Ned Lamont .....
Yes. If Hayworth wins the nomination its a very likely Democratic pickup. His Abramoff connections cost him his Congressional seat a few years ago, it would cost the GOP the Senate seat if he were to win the nomination.

McCain is neck and neck with Hayworth now. Many here are really upset with McCains lack of actions of late. While McCain is still favored to win the primary and the General - its possible that J.D. can pull it off.

Hayworth is very conservative - and some polls are indicating that is what the voters want - its the Obama backlash issue - to undo what Obama has done.

Frankly - the race to watch may be our Governors race - especially is Sheriff Arpaio throws his hat into that ring.

So is the GOP there ready to do this? Will McCain do a Lieberman?

Actually, the Abramoff issue is a non issue. Why you ask? Because, there were enough Democrats who also received contributions from or through Abramoff, that the Dems won't bring it up.

What a load of garbage. Jack Abramoff was a Republican scandal plain and simple, and Hayworth was one of the most deeply involved.

Hayworth was a tv news sports guy here, and not a very good one.

Here's today's take on this GOP contest, written by Michael Gerson who was with the Bush administration.

Neither the Tea Party nor Michele Bachmann will endorse him. FWIW, Palin has endorsed McCain. Hayworth was booted out of the House of Reps in 2006 in the DEM backlash. Gerson also has some words for McCain, the piece is worth readying.

Excerpts:

- ... Hayworth is a toxic influence. ... Hayworth's 12 years representing parts of the Phoenix suburbs have been described by his former colleague Dick Armey as a "fairly short, undistinguished congressional career."

- after an epiphany of sorts in 2005 ... Hayworth became a militant foe of Mexican immigration. Not just illegal immigration. Hayworth proposed a moratorium on legal immigration from Mexico. ... He voted against an anti-immigrant measure -- which, among other provisions, prohibited religious charities from aiding illegal immigrants -- because he thought the legislation was too soft. ... Hayworth's share of the vote in some Hispanic-influenced precincts dropped by more than 20 points, ... To this appeal, Hayworth has added a "birther" message accusing President Obama of "identity theft." Here he is on legalizing gay marriage: "I guess that would mean if you really had affection for your horse, I guess you could marry your horse."
