This isn't the first time she has said this, so she must be serious about it.

I wonder, since E.R. visits are more expensive, do we bring cows or horses?

Where do pigs and goats fall into this pay scale?

To be fair, I understand the barter system has some merit to it. Something this woman needs to realize though is that its not 1900 any more.

1. Labs
2. It isn't just saw off a limb, lots of advanced tools are needed, not to mention staff are you gonna paint all their houses to get your surgery done?
3. Drugs cost money too, is Pfeizer or Glaxo-Smith-Kline gonna take chicken's too? Are they gonna barter?
4. 6 figure debt. 7 years of your life gone (med school plus residency), last I checked, livestock was not an acceptable form of payment for student loans

I'm completely fine with bartering and negotiating rates, but it has to be done on a large scale. Medicine isn't just one individual any more, its a team effort. I think European countries have figured out how to do it to make it affordable and we should steal ideas from them.

Here's a very simple idea, might need some details filled in. I think a lot of people could get on board with this.

Government eliminates med school debt. In return, for 10 years of active practicing medicine, docs have to be on a set fee rate, thats posted in the docs office for all procedures. (it can vary a bit depending on local cost of living).

Also, lets have electronic medical records, preferably on a little sort of credit card chip or something that shows a patients entire history. That way, if a patient is seeing multiple specialists for problems (like many do) and are on many different meds, a doctor can see all of these and find potential problems with interactions. Better quality practice, and you could probably get rid of a records keeper in the office, less cost for the appointment

Of course I'm a socialist who will destroy our country, so I probably shouldn't be listened to.

Will the docs pay their nurses in chickens and goats, too? I don't think we're allowed to keep livestock in our backyards in my neighborhood.

I live in a condo development and we are specificaly prohibited from keeping chickens. What am going to do if I cannot pay the doctor? Go off somewhere to die?

That is the essence of the health care debate. What happens to people that cannot afford to pay the medical bills. What happens to people that cannot afford to buy medical insurance?

As a perk, I think the doctors will offer free horse and buggy service to the nurses.
