Republican Sen. Bob Bennett was thrown out of office Saturday by delegates at the Utah GOP convention in what represents a stunning defeat for a once-popular three-term incumbent who fell victim to a growing conservative movement nationwide.

Bennett's failure to make it into Utah's GOP primary — let alone win his party's nomination — makes him the first congressional incumbent to be ousted this year and demonstrates the difficult challenges candidates are facing from the right in 2010.

Yep, another one bites the dust. This thread will surely be ignored by the GOP faithful as they would much rather remain in denial of the iminent demise of their party.

I don't think they're in denial. I think they believe that the purges and purity tests are actually good for the party.

Good. He voted for TARP,which is basically a slush fund for the Treasury, with no accountability.

He was in league with a democrat for HC plan supporting the individual mandate.

There are NO incumbents that are safe, in either party.

Besides, he was another career politician, which we have too many of.

The two who will face off are true conservatives.

His being ousted had to do with TARP as mentioned plus remember Utah is probably the most conservative state in the union. Only Idaho comes close in my view.

what the ? are you talking about? Why would the Republicans ignore this positng? I don't think it was started to blast anyone or anything, just a fact and an interesting news story...

Just because this happened certainly isn't the end or the beginning of anything.

Another reason he was ousted. When he first ran for office, he promised no more than 2 terms. He got a pass on a third, but not any more.

Good riddance. Lots of incumbents on both sides need their turn now.

It's tempting to see Bennett's loss as a sign of the GOP's demise and/or an exercise in "purging", but mostly it seems to be due to the quirky way that Utah's GOP chooses its candidates, which is disproportionately controlled by the most extreme & ideologically-driven in the party.

Yet by most accounts, their choices don't seem to represent the views of most Utah voters.
