Stewart doesn't even really play a persona...he's just indignant about issues...and goes on rants exposing logical flaws with the world...which is funny, but once you understand where his logical flaws lie, it gets a bit old.
Colbert, though, is extremely clever. It's like he's playing a character that self aggrandizes, but the real him isn't that (which throws people), except that it is, but just exaggerated...only slightly...and that's the joke. Plus he's wittier, and banterier and punnier...
All Stewart does is play stuff and then stare blankly and dumbfounded for a few seconds and then attack. There's way more to Colbert, his segments are better, and he has layers of funny.
Colbert's humor is the best. I laugh just thinking about some of the stuff he says. Even stuff I don't really understand (because I don't follow all streams of politics) somehow is funny to me.
Yeah, they come across extremely shrill and condescening and reminds me a lot of Bill Maher, in a way
...but that's why it's funny...
