Why is the television miniseries, Downton Abbey, so popular?

What gives the show its appeal?

Do you watch it? If so, how regularly?

it really is a take off from the Upstairts/down stairs series that were also popular. It just doesn't appeal to me as much really.Wife likes it but not has much a Upstairs /Down Stairs.I mean compared to the other its like comparing a comic book to a book well written.

No Commercials for a start...

Second, enjoy some of the characters

Third, like viewing programs from that time period where effort is made to include time period correct settings and electricity, automobiles, telephones... were all coming of age.

Well written and acted and filmed. It's like watching a bit of history.

Its definitely second rate compared to Upstairs Downstairs on every level and I can't get into it. Maybe people like to feel cultured if they watch a show thats touted as such?
Mad Men gets a lot of praise and its much better even if you don't get into the hype.

Can I ask when Upstairs Downstairs gets good? My girlfriend and I both love Downton, but we're nearly done with it, so I borrowed season 1 of Upstairs from my library. We've seen the first 2 episodes, and so far the story and acting are just OK, and the production values are pretty shoddy. Since it's supposedly the most popular Masterpiece show ever, I imagine it will improve at some point?

I feel the same about DA. I wonder if the appeal is because people may not remember when there was virtually always some period piece on PBS - the original " Upstairs, Downstairs," "Poldark," "I, Claudius," "Brideshead Revisted"...

I find it an okay program, but way overhyped.

Why are most things from hollywood movie/tv/music popular? Most of its garbage or over rated. People today seemed to be easily entertained by crap. The Jersey Shore and Kards received millions and millions of viewers each week. Kinda tells you something about society, sadly.
