Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce (what wonderfully British names!) were the most famous in the United States, although the "Sherlock Holmes" movies they played in had little to do with Arthur Conan Doyle's stories and Bruce popularized the depiction of Watson as a bumbling jolly old chap. I still think they have their charms.
Jeremy Brett's intense, eccentric portrayal of Holmes in the British TV series of the 1980s and 1990s is considered the best. Sadly, Brent was experiencing mental illness at the time so I tend to wonder if his personal pain was captured in his performance.
I don't care much for the Benedict Cumberbatch (sp?) version of Sherlock. Too many gimmicks for me.
Jeremy Brett was it for me, that was the Holmes I grew up on. Think Edward Hardwicke (sp?) was the Watson in those.
I didn't mind the somewhat related series called "Murder Rooms", supposedly about Dr. Bell who was the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes (if I'm recalling correctly).
The re-boot with Benedict Cumberbatch failed to draw me in, too confusing (IMHO) and I don't find the lead actor appealing (realize I'm in the minority about that).
Jeremy Brett and David Burke. Burke played Watson only for 13 episodes, but I prefer him over Hardwicke, although he's pretty good as well.
LOVE the new Sherlock with Cumberbatch and whoever plays Watson -- a very clever update, and it's great to see it set in present day London. I won't watch the one set in the US with Lucy Liu (sp?) - too much of a stretch for me.
