I was thinking about Scotty. Certainly if anyone does, he knows how to blow up the ship without using the self destruct; otherwise, they would have been really put out of place with Kirk and Spock gone in "The Enterprise Incident".
But does he have the tactical know how, the guts to push the ship to the limits? "The Naked Time", "The Galileo Seven", and "The Paradise Syndrome" (to say nothing of his insubordination in that one) might say otherwise. He does seem to err on the side of caution, perhaps even treating the ship like Keith Davenport treated his crews in "Twelve O'Clock High"....and failing to get the mission done. Further, there were times when the ship faced destruction in orbit, on his watch, and it took the landing party to save his bacon.
But, to each their own.
I was thinking more of his command performance in "Friday's Child."
My favorite of the listed S-F commanders is Captain Nemo.
But not the blustery, bombastic, jerk as portrayed by James Mason in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". I mean the cool Captain Nemo as portrayed by Herbert Lom in "Mysterious Island".

Having read both of the Jules Verne books, I have a different take. As a young man, Nemo was a fanatic fighting for the end of war by destroying all military and killing all soldiers (well, sailors. It was Rober the conqueror who destroyed armies) As an old man, defeated, Nemo attains a bit of wisdom and does what he can to assist the new arrivals, maybe seeing that hope for the and of war is the prosperity of good people.
Verne himself recognized the futility of his idealism. Note that both Nemo and Rober tragically failed.
I've read both of the Verne books, too. I think that the Nemo portrayed by Herbert Lom was more like the Nemo as described in both books than the Nemo portrayed by James Mason.

And Captain Nemo as done by Robert Ryan? Just curious to what the opinion is of such well read men.
I didn't know that Nemo had been portrayed by Robert Ryan, so I had to do some research.
I've never heard of the movie "Captain Nemo and the Underwater City". I see that there was no Verne novel by that title. I'd like to see the movie and check out Ryan's performance. I'm sure it would be good. Better than Mason's, and probably almost as good as Lom's.
Thanks for letting me know about a movie I hadn't been aware of.

It was a fav childhood movie of mine.....so much that I picked up the DVD the other month, watched it again for the first time in decades back on the 23rd of September.
Just remember that for all the flaws some critic might want to point out in the movie..............he's NEMO. He can do anything!
WTH? Where's Zapp Brannigan? J/K. Jean-Luc Picard has my utmost respect. Man card of the year goes to my favorite man-wh*re captain, James T. Kirk. But none of those were facing extinction and an enemy that never dies, always resurrecting....so my vote goes to Commander William Adama in the newer Battlestar tv show.
